An 18 hole, par 72 championship course measuring 6,497 yards from the blue tees, sets the scene for golfing guests to play the game to a different beat at our family owned resort on the Gulf of Mexico. The trees that line the course, along with the flowering plants for which the state was named, provide a challenging mood of serenity for all golfers &emdash; from vacation duffers to the highly skilled professional.
Illustrious golfers Joe Kirkwood, Gene Sarazen, Patty Berg and Walter Hagen have played exhibitions over the sporty layout which has been the venue for some of the most outstanding competition in the state, including the Florida PGA and Florida Seniors Open. "This is a far-above-average course." says 86 year old Paul Bell, the club's first golf professional. "The Watkins family has always kept it in top condition. Why, it's the thing that made this town." says Bell.
An international clientele patronizes the full service golf club and pro shop. It isn't unusual to ask for a tee time and be paired with a couple from London, Amsterdam, Munich or Geneva. PGA Pro Dan Bracy, Director of Golf, and his staff of 10 or more are geared to fully accommodate golfing visitors with appropriate tee times, lessons on request, compatible pairings when asked and golf shop merchandise from golf balls to the latest in stylish sportswear.
Within our six residential buildings on the resort property are 318 rooms overlooking either the Gulf of Mexico or the golf course offering a wide variety of accommodations with large closets, cable television, in-room safes, security key cards, climate control and comfortable appointments. Suites are available, each with a bedroom, living room, microwave oven, bar and a refrigerator. With a multi-million dollar renovation, the 94 room Watkins Building now offers "superior" rooms featuring daily newspapers, signature terry cloth robes and nightly turn down service. Staffed daily, a concierge room is available exclusively to guests of the building, who can take advantage of complimentary tea and coffee, an honor bar and all of the accouterments of an office away from home, including computers, printers, and facsimile machines. The hotel has been the getaway retreat to famous guests, including Rose Cleveland, sister of President Grover Cleveland, Daphne du Maurier, author of "Rebecca," and President Richard M. Nixon.
