Hip Flexor and Low Back
Tightness
by Todd D. Saunders
The most common problems of some golfers, at one time
or another, and sometimes even on a chronic continuous basis, is hip
tightness and/or low back discomfort. This problem could possibly be
the result of muscle tightness of the iliopsoas which is also known
as the hip flexor. The iliopsoas originates at the lumbar spine and
its insertion at the lesser trochanter of the femur.
The main reason for this tightness is due to the continuous
tension on the iliopsoas muscle throughout the golf swing. The
postural position of the hips, in the golf stance and swing, remain
flexed slightly forward until well after impact. In addition to the
full swing, putting also maintains the hips in a forward flexed
position throughout the stroke.
When we practice for hours and play for hours, remember; there is
continuous tension and a tremendous strain being placed on this
iliopsoas muscle, resulting in tightness. The effects of iliopsoas
muscle tightness during the golf swing can result in:
1. Restricted hip movement which may keep you from making a full
turn during the take away.
2. Limitations in your ability to clear the left hip (for the
right-handed golfer) during the down swing.
Not only does hip flexor muscle tightness
restrict hip mobility during the golf swing, but it can also result
in low back pain (since the iliopsoas muscle originates at the lumbar
spine). Specific muscle massage, along with manual stretching of the
iliopsoas will help counter-affect the effects of the forward hip
flexed position allowing for better hip flexibility and control
during your golf swing.
Long-term effects of iliopsoas tightness can cause decreased
range-of-motion of the hip(s) which may increase the risk of
arthritic changes in the joint(s) as well as chronic back pain.
