Course 1 at Half Moon Golf Club, in Montego Bay.

Golfers practice driving at Breezes.

For a change of pace, Half Moon offers croquet.

The unhurried way of life, the gentle trade winds sighing in the palms, the smiling caddie who hands you the right club every time, make Jamaica a paradise for golfers.

Imagine yourself on Tryall's 15th par 3 (where the Johnny Walker World Championship was hosted) with the challenge of the Caribbean all the way to the green. At 175 yards, you finger your 5 iron, only to pause when you remember the Flint River runs straight across the front of the green and the steady tropical breeze is more like 20 miles an hour, left top right. Time for your knockdown 3 iron! The world's finest golfers consider par and achievement on this magnificent hole &endash; man against nature.

No less intimidating is a selection of fabulous golf holes in a country where the golfer can scour the true origins and atmosphere of the game. Runaway Bay, developed by the British in the early 1950's, has several caddies who are 30 year employees of the club.

Home course of Seymour Rose, Jamaica's leading professional golfer, Runaway Bay is very walkable with a caddie, and laid out on gentle slopes opposite the supremely comfortable SuperClubs Resort on the beach.

A new clubhouse is being finished now to replace the one lost in a fire. The golf operation is excellent and golf lessons are available.

As a qualifying course for the World Cup Team, Runaway Bay will test your game to its limits. The fabulous views over the lush tropical foliage to the ocean beyond, are unforgettable especially on the back nine.

Jamaica's North Coast

Flying into Montego Bay on the northwest end of the island, the golfer has a surfeit of choices to make. The basic choice one has to make includes attending the David Leadbetter Golf Academy at Half Moon & Tennis Beach Resort. It is managed by Kevyn Cunningham with a professional ease and sociability which makes the experience so beneficial. A short stroll to the open air 19th hole will relieve any remaining worries about your takeaway.

Here, in peaceful elegant surroundings, you will be served by a charming Jamaican, whose cocktails include "Fruit for Thought" and "Brown Girl."

Yes, Half Moon is a dream come true, a haven of quiet elegance in an all too hurried world. Director of Golf Attila Becsy and resident professional Byron Bernard are unfailingly helpful and masters of their craft &endash; hospitality.

Great Houses, Great Golf

The remnants of the plantation life of past centuries abound along this Jamaican coast. Rose Hall, set high on the mountainside, overlooks the 18- hole course which tumbles and turns through the foothills on the inward half. The Wyndham Resort on the beach is quietly lost to view as you climb through the forest. However, "Chinanous Reed" the oceanside par 4 right on the ocean and "Peek-A-Blue," the previous par 3, will linger in your memory. The combination of ocean and the dense jungle vegetation on the homeward stretch makes for a real Jamaican golf experience.

Ocho Rios

You won't find "8 Rivers" at Ocho Rios as translation may have you believe. Instead, the mispronunciation of generations of British settlers turned Spanish explorers' descriptive word "Churrias" (waterfalls) into the name we use today.

Dunn's River Falls, celebrated in films, and a real expedition of river rafting, is close by the Sandals Golf and Country Club, as is the Upton Golf Course, set in a high valley above the town. Without question, this unique hidden valley, unsuspected as you climb the narrow road from town, is a veritable "Shangri-La" hidden from civilization. Uniformed caddies, eye-stopping tropical flowers, huge trees and the muffled noises of village set Upton apart. The speed of the greens will surprise you, and the visual drama of the surroundings will leave you certain you will never tire of golf on fairways like these.

Jamaica - Solid Gold

At Runaway Bay, one of our caddies launched into a burst of singing rhyme each time a good drive was struck. Happy with our shots, he sang, "Solid Gold, Rock & Roll, Solid Gold Run Dat Ball, Sol...id Go...ld, man!" to the delight of our foursome. It sums up what you can expect on your golfing vacation to the land of wood and water &endash; Jamaica &endash; Solid Gold!
